Women's Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season with First-Place Finish Saturday

Annapolis, Md. - The Navy women's track & field team opened its 2005 outdoor schedule Saturday with a first-place finish (155 points) out of five teams at Ingram Field. The Midshipmen improved to 4-0 with the finish.

The Mids edged out Maryland, which placed second with 125 points, while Maine (79 points), Colgate (31 points) and American (19 points) finished in third, fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Navy earned six individual victories on the day to win the meet's overall team championship.

"This was a great meet for us to begin our outdoor season," Navy head coach Carla Criste said. "We had some great performances today considering how cold the weather was and the layoff that we had from the indoor season."

The Midshipmen turned in several strong performances in the running events. Sophomore Loni Forsythe (Chattanooga, Tenn.) won the 100 meters with a time of 12.30, while senior outdoor captain Tineisha Davis (Madisonville, Ky.) claimed the win in the 400 meters in a time of 55.41. Sophomore Kirsten Andrews (New Holland, Pa.) earned gold in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.75.

Navy also was victorious in a distance event, as sophomore Allison Barlow (Orange Park, Fla.) won the 10,000 meters in a time of 37.13.88.

In the field events, sophomore Danielle Still (Lawnside, N.J.) won the javelin with a throw of 135'7-1/2", while freshman Jacquelyn Charnigo (Medina, Ohio) finished in a tie for first place in the high jump with a leap of 5'3".

Navy will be back in action next Saturday as it competes in the Charlotte Invitational in Charlotte, N.C. The meet will begin at 10 a.m.
