Senior Katie Taylor
March 30, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's outdoor track and field team (6-0) will compete in the Maryland Invitational on Saturday at Kehoe Track in College Park. The meet will begin at 10:00 am with the 5,000m run. Navy will be joined by host-Maryland, American, Catholic, UDC, George Washington, Georgetown, Howard CC, Johns Hopkins, Temple, UMBC and York.
This is Navy's final meet before the annual Outdoor Star Meet at Army next weekend.
Last week Navy topped a seven-team field at the Navy Invitational at Ingram Field. Navy won eight events on the day and swept all four of the distance races (1,500m, 5,000m, 10,000m and 3,000m steeplechase).
After winning the 5,000m run with a time of 17:25.07, junior Brigid Byrne was tabbed as the Patriot League's Track-Athlete of the Week. Byrne was the 2012 Patriot League 5,000m run indoor champion in February.
Senior Katie Taylor took first place in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Navy Invitational, clocking a personal record time of 11:08.14. Taylor is currently Navy's highest ranked athlete in the NCAA's East Region with an 18th place showing in the steeplechase.
Sophomore Lauren Allam won the discus last weekend with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 142-7 (43.47m). Allam became the first Mid to hit an ECAC mark this outdoor season.
Senior All-American Jess Palacio will see her first competition of the outdoor season on Saturday. Palacio last competed in the mile run at the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship, where she placed 16th to earn All-America Second-Team honors.
Navy will take on Army in the annual Outdoor Star Meet next Saturday at 11:00 am in West Point, N.Y. Army holds a 13-12 edge in the all-time outdoor series, but Navy has won three straight and six of the last seven. A Star win next week would cap off a perfect 8-0 record against Army in indoor and outdoor track for the Class of 2012.
