ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The Navy women's outdoor track and field program will compete at the historic Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Thursday. Live results will be available. Navy is scheduled to compete in two relays, the 4x100m and the 4x400m, and the high jump, shot put, discus, javelin, 3,000m steeplechase and the 5,000m run.
Junior Teronda Brown, who recently broke Navy's shot put school record, will compete in the college section on Thursday. Junior Lauren Allam will compete in the Eastern section of the shot put and the college section of the discus, along with junior Maressa Guynn. Junior Alix Membreno will round out Navy's throwing contingent by competing in the college javelin section. Allam placed second in the college division of the discus in 2012.
Senior Brigid Byrne, who broke the Navy 10,000m run record last week, will be competing in the college championship section of the 5,000m run at the Penn Relays. Also competing in a distance event will be junior Christina Blair who is running in the college championship section of the 3,000m steeplechase.
Navy will also have its two standout high jumpers, Kristin Smith and Veronica Ffrench, in action in the college section of the event.
At the 2012 Penn Relays, Navy's distance medley relay team of Annie-Norah Beveridge, Mansfield Murph, Shannon Cuthbert and Jess Palacio set a school record with a time of 11:46.46 to place eighth in the Championship of America section.
Byrne is the reigning Patriot League Track-Athlete of the Week after breaking the school 10K record at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California with a time of 34:51. Byrne sits at No. 26 in the NCAA's East Region. Brown was named the league's field-athlete of the week after setting a new outdoor shot put record of 47-5¾ at the McDaniel Twilight Invitational.
With the conference outdoor championship rapidly approaching, many eyes are focused on the Patriot League performance list. At this point in the season, Smith is ranked No. 1 in the high jump, Allam leads the discus, Brown leads the shot put and Byrne is ranked No. 1 in the 10,000m. Byrne also sits second in the 5K, Ffrench is second in the high jump and Membreno is second in the javelin.
Lehigh will host the 2013 Patriot League Outdoor Championship on May 3-4 in Bethlehem, Pa. Navy is the defending outdoor champions and has been selected to win once again by the Patriot League Preseason Poll.
