Women's Track and Field Duo Honored by Patriot League
April 30, 2012
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy sophomore Lauren Allam (Pasadena, Md.) and freshman Shannon Cuthbert (Orange Park, Fla.) have been honored by the Patriot League for their performances at the 118th Penn Relays last week, the league office announced Monday.
Allam was named the Patriot League Women's Field-Athlete of the Week and Cuthbert was tabbed as the Patriot League Women's Track and Field Rookie of the Week. This is the second award of the season for both Allam and Cuthbert.
Allam placed second in the college division of the discus throw at the Penn Relays with a season-best mark of 164-9 (50.22m, ECAC). The throw was the second-best in school history, behind only Allam's own school record of 165-7.
The discus mark ranks Allam No. 22 in the NCAA's East Region rankings this season and she is almost certain to finish the year in the top 48 to earn a berth to the NCAA's East Regional in Jacksonville over Memorial Day Weekend.
Allam will defend her 2011 Patriot League discus title at the league outdoor meet at Holy Cross this weekend. Allam is the top-ranked discus thrower heading into the league championship this Friday-Saturday. In 2011, Allam set her PR of 165-7 at the league meet to establish a new meet record and bring home Patriot League Rookie of the Meet honors.
Allam has had a very successful spring in the discus, placing first or second in the event in all seven of Navy's competitions.
Cuthbert played an important role in Navy's relay performances at the Penn Relays. The Navy women competed in two Championship of America races, the highest collegiate competition level at the historic meet.
Cuthbert was a part of the school-record setting distance medley relay squad that placed eighth in the Championship of America race with a time of 11:46.46. Cuthbert ran the 800m leg of the DMR, clocking a 2:17 split.
Later in the weekend, Cuthbert ran a 2:13 opening leg split on the team's 4x800m Championship of America squad, helping Navy place 12th with an ECAC-qualifying effort of 9:06.80.
The 2012 Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championship will begin on Friday and finish on Saturday night in Worcester, Mass.
