Guynn Named NAAA Athlete of the Week
May 9, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Junior Maressa Guynn (Uniontown, Pa.) has been named the NAAA Athlete of the Week Presented by Rolls-Royce for the week ending May 5. Guynn is a thrower on the Navy women's track and field team.
Guynn broke the Navy school record in the discus when winning the event at the 2013 Patriot League Outdoor Championship last weekend at Lehigh. Guynn posted a mark of 170-6 (51.97m), which also set a new Patriot League Championship meet record.
"It was really a team effort," Guynn said. "Lauren [Allam], Teronda [Brown] and I are all neck-and-neck. We went 1-2-4 in the discus so we were able to rack up a lot of points and help out the team. It was a good feeling."
Guynn also placed fourth in the shot put with a personal-best mark of 42-4¾ (12.92m) and was fifth in the hammer throw at 162-8 (49.58m). Guynn accumulated 16 points in the throwing events and was named the Patriot League Championship Field-Athlete of the Meet.
As a team, Navy finished as the runner-up behind Bucknell with 141 team points. Navy has placed first or second at each of the last 10 Patriot League Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
Guynn will compete in the discus at the ECAC Outdoor Championship this weekend at Princeton. She will be the top seed in the discus with her record-breaking mark from last weekend.
The junior is also ranked No. 12 in the NCAA's East Region in the discus and she will compete in the NCAA's East Regional Championship in Greensboro, N.C. from May 23-25.
