CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy junior distance runner Brigid Byrne (Vienna, Va.) has been selected to the 2012 Patriot League Women's Track and Field All-Academic Team, the conference office announced Friday. Since the Patriot League began conducting all-academic teams for all sports in the fall of 2010, Byrne has been selected two times each to the cross country, indoor track and outdoor track all-academic teams.

The 2012 Patriot League Women's Track and Field All-Academic consists of 12 student-athletes and is headlined by Bucknell's Caroline Tolli, the outdoor track and field scholar-athlete of the year.

To be eligible for the all-academic team, student-athletes must be at least sophomores at their respective schools with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 and be key contributors to their team. Voting by the league's sports information contacts determined the all-academic team.

Byrne placed third at the Patriot League Championship last weekend in the 10,000m run with a time of 36:54.78. She also placed eighth in the 5,000m run at the league meet with a time of 17:40.39. Navy won the team title with 156.5 points.

Byrne's top performance of the season was a fifth-place showing at the Mt. SAC Relay's in the 10,000m run with a time of 35:35.51, the fifth-best time in school history.

Byrne was also named the Patriot League's Track-Athlete of the Week on March 26 after winning the 5,000m run with a time of 17:25.07, an outdoor personal record, to win the event at the Navy Invitational.

Byrne surpassed the ECAC-qualifying standard in both the 5,000m run and the 10,000m run during the outdoor season. She won the 5,000m title at the indoor league meet in 2012 and was the runner-up in the 10K in 2011.

The distance standout is an English (honors) major with a 3.89 GPA. She has been named to the Superintendent's List and the Dean's List in each of her first five semesters at the Naval Academy. She also ranks 24th of 1,094 classmates in Overall Order of Merit and is eighth in Military Order of Merit.
