May 16, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Three throwers from the Navy women's track and field team have been accepted to the 2013 NCAA East Regional in Greensboro, N.C. from May 23-25. Juniors Lauren Allam (discus), Maressa Guynn (discus) and Alix Membreno (javelin) will be representing Navy at North Carolina A&T's Aggie Stadium next weekend.
The top-48 ranked athletes in each event in the East Region qualify for the NCAA East Regional Championship. The top-12 finishers at the East Regional will join the top-12 finishers from the NCAA West Regional to advance to the 2013 NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore. from June 5-8.
Guynn is Navy's top-ranked athlete with her school record mark of 170-6 (51.97m), which she set in winning the discus at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship. Guynn is seeded 13th in the event. She will be making her first appearance at the NCAA East Regional.
Allam is ranked 40th in the discus with her season-best mark of 162-3 (49.46m), which she recorded at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship while placing second to Guynn. This is Allam's third trip to the NCAA Regional.
Membreno is also making a third appearance at the NCAA Regional. Membreno placed 37th in the javelin in 2011 and was 29th in 2012. Membreno will be seeded 34th in the javelin this season with her mark of 149-9 (45.64m). Membreno won the javelin at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship this spring.
Guynn, Allam and Membreno all earned ECAC All-East honors in their events at the ECAC Outdoor Championship last week.
Under the direction of assistant coach Steven Sarigiannis, Navy throwers have secured eight entries to the NCAA East Regional in the past three years.
Navy has more entries than any other Patriot League school.
