ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy senior Carey Young (Virginia Beach, Va. / Ocean Lakes) will test her might against the East's elite steeplechasers this weekend at the NCAA Regional Track Championship in Greensboro, N.C.
Young will compete amongst 13 runners in the first of three sections (there are 46 total entries) of the women's 3,000m steeplechase on Saturday, beginning at 7:15 pm.
She qualified for this weekend's regional championship with a 10-minute, 49.92-second clocking at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational on April 17. The performance came while running the steeplechase for just the fifth time in her career and currently stands as the fourth-best mark in program history.
With the effort, Young, who owns three of the top-10 all-time Navy showings, ranks as the school's second-fastest steeplechaser, behind only former standout Amy Baxter ('01).
This spring, she has produced three individual victories in the steeplechase, including her first career league title at April's Patriot League Outdoor Championship. During this winter's indoor season, Young was a key point-scorer for the Mids at the league championship, finishing third in the 5,000m and taking sixth in the 3,000m.
The top-five finishers will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship two weekends from now in Fayetteville, Ark., on June 10-13. A handful of at-large spots will also be awarded to athletes from a national pool to fill out the championship field.
Young is aiming to become the second Navy women's track competitor in program history to qualify for the NCAA Championship and the first since Kim McGreevy did so in 1995. McGreevy brought home All-America honors in the 3,000-meter run during the 1995 indoor championship.
