ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
Navy junior Brigid Byrne (Vienna, Va.) has been named to the Capital One All-Academic District II First Team for women's track and field/cross country, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) recently announced.
Byrne helped the cross country team defeat Army in the fall by placing second overall and also aided the team in winning the Patriot League Championship by taking ninth place and earning second-team all-league honors. Byrne also placed 16th at the ECAC Cross Country Championships.
Taking first place in the 5,000m at the Patriot League Championship highlighted Byrne's indoor track and field season. She clocked an indoor personal record of 17:03.16, the second-fasted time in school history. She also scored in the 3,000m at the league meet, placing fifth to help Navy to a runner-up finish.
Byrne also qualified for the ECAC Indoor Track and Field Championship, placing ninth in the 5,000m.
Byrne helped Navy capture the Patriot League Outdoor Championship by placing third in the 10,000m. She also ran a personal record 10K time of 35:35 at the Mt. SAC Relay's, the fifth-best time in school history.
Byrne also earned a pair of Patriot League Track-Athlete of the Week honors during the 2011-12 season.
Byrne earned Patriot League All-Academic Team honors in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track during her junior year after also sweeping the trio of honors last season. This is her first CoSIDA All-Academic accolade.
The English (honors) major holds a 3.91 cumulative GPA and is ranked 22nd among 1,089 classmates in Overall Order of Merit. Byrne has been named to the Superintendent's List in all six of her semesters at the Naval Academy.
To be eligible for the initial district ballot, student-athletes must have attained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30, be at a minimum a sophomore academically and a starter or key reserve on their respective team. District II is made up of Division I schools from Washington, D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
Byrne will now be on the national Academic All-American ballot. The CoSIDA Academic All-American team will be announced on June 21.
