Women's Track and Field Garners 21 Academic Citations

Three-time honoree Jordan Kronshage

June 29, 2012

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Navy women's track and field team placed 21 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, the conference office recently announced. Student-athletes needed a grade-point average of at least 3.20 during the 2012 spring semester and be a member of the track and field team during the indoor or outdoor season to earn a spot on the academic honor roll.

Junior Brigid Byrne (Vienna, Va.), an English (honors) major, headlined Navy's contingent with a perfect 4.0 GPA for her third career selection to the academic honor roll. Byrne earned CoSIDA Academic All-America Third-Team honors for cross country/track and field and was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District II First Team. Byrne won the 5,000-meter run at the 2012 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship.

Joining Byrne as three-time honorees are recent graduates Mollie Hebda (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Katie Taylor (Salem, Ore.) and juniors Caitlyn Fine (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Jordan Kronshage (Ocean Engineering). Hebda was one of four student-athletes to earn a 4.00 GPA in the spring semester.

Recent graduates Lauren Carpenter (Murphy, Texas), Colleen McFadden (Ft. Washington, Md.), Rachel Minker (Sebastian, Fla.) and Amanda Phelps (Oceanside, Calif.) and juniors Jenne Jolie (Meridian, Miss.), Camille Ross (St. Leonard, Md.) and Melanie Sluzewicz (Lockport, Ill.) earned academic honor roll laurels for the second time in their careers.

Phelps, the 2012 outdoor team captain, won the Patriot League Indoor weight throw title and also earned ECAC All-East honors in the event. McFadden was on Navy's first-place 4x400-meter relay team at the outdoor league meet and Sluzewicz earned all-league second-team honors in the heptathlon.

Eight student-athletes earned a spot on the honor roll for the first time, including freshman Shannon Cuthbert (Orange Park, Fla.), who was a two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week during the 2011-12 season.

Navy won the 2012 Patriot League Outdoor Championship, placed second at the indoor league meet, sent three athletes to the NCAA East Outdoor Regional and recent graduate Jess Palacio (Sun Valley, Nev.) earned Second-Team All-America honors in the indoor mile.
