CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Recent Naval Academy graduates and 2008-09 women's track team captains Debbi Choi (Clarksville, Md.) and Angelique Martin (Lexington Park, Md.) were among the 10 Navy student-athletes named to the 2009 Patriot League Women's Track Academic Honor Roll, the conference office recently announced.

Both Choi and Martin were among the seven Mids to have recorded at least a 3.40 GPA during the spring semester, earning mention to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for the first time in their respective tenures.

Highlighting the list of honorees are a trio of three-time honor roll awardees in 2009 grads Katie Berkey (Tempe, Ariz.) and Maureen Dooley (Durham, Conn.), as well as rising senior Jessica Schlaegel (Nashport, Ohio). A six-time Dean's List recipient, Berkey led the pack posting a 3.67 GPA as an applied mathematics major and graduating in May with a cumulative average of 3.57.

Rising senior Kayla Sax (Richland, Wash.) led the group of second-time honor roll recipients as one just 10 Patriot League student-athletes who earned a 4.0 grade-point average for the spring term.

A systems engineering major, Sax carries a perfect 4.0 GPA headed into her senior year at the Naval Academy. Among the Class of 2010 (1,061 students), she currently ranks first in Academic Order of Merit, fifth in military performance and 10th in Overall Order of Merit.

Rising seniors Erica Ziel (Saginaw, Mich.) and Abby Gesecki (Nanticoke, Pa.) both joined Sax on the list. Ziel, the 2009 Patriot League Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a First-Team Academic All-District selection, completed the spring term with a 3.80 GPA while majoring in Oceanography. Meanwhile, Gesecki, a systems engineering major, posted a 3.83 mark during the spring.

Rounding out the list of honorees were rising junior Katie Rentz (San Diego, Calif.) and rising sophomore Lauren Carson (Summersville, W. Va.), both whom collected their first honor roll nods.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have both earned a varsity letter during the 2008-09 season and attained a minimum 3.20 grade-point average for the 2009 spring term.
