ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Larry Bock, the winningest coach in collegiate volleyball history, has been named the new head coach of the Navy women's volleyball program. The announcement was made today by Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk.
"I am extremely pleased that Larry Bock will join the Naval Academy family," said Gladchuk. "His accomplishments in the profession are phenomenal. Those who have played for him speak with the absolute highest praise and with sincere appreciation for how he has influenced their lives in such a positive way. We are all looking forward to the leadership he will bring to our program and especially the impact he will have on our midshipmen as a distinguished role model, coach and educator."
Bock has amassed an overall record of 1,352-283-4 (82.6%) in 34 seasons as the head coach of the women's volleyball team at Juniata College and six years as the school's men's volleyball coach. He has won nearly 200 more matches than the coach with the next highest number of overall victories. His 1,252 wins as a women's head coach leads all coaches by nearly 150 victories and his winning percentage of 86.7 percent on the women's side ranks second in the history of the sport among coaches with at least 10 years of experience.
"I'm delighted and excited about the opportunity to coach at the Naval Academy," said Bock. "There are few places where I would ever consider moving and Navy is at the top of that short list. Mike Schwob has been one of the best coaches and people in the volleyball world so I'm honored to be following in those big footprints. I'm mostly looking forward to getting to know the volleyball team and working with this young, talented group to achieve some really neat and reachable goals."
His Juniata women's teams compiled a record of 1,252-192. The program won at least 30 matches in each of the last 31 seasons and surpassed 40 wins 10 times during this time period. The Eagles compiled a staggering 358-14 (96.2%) record against conference opponents, with wins in 323 consecutive matches against conference foes since their last loss in 1981. And while Juniata competes on the NCAA's Division III level, the Eagles also posted a 67-23 (74.4%) record against NCAA Division I teams.
Bock guided the Eagles to 30 consecutive NCAA Division III NCAA Tournaments. Juniata advanced to the semifinal round of the event 25 times (including 14 of the last 15 years), appeared in eight championship matches and won NCAA titles in 2004 and 2006.
Individually, Bock's players garnered 65 All-America certificates, four National Player-of-the-Year awards and one National Rookie-of-the-Year laurel. Additionally, five Juniata players received College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America accolades, two were selected as the organization's Academic All-American of the Year and two received an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.
Bock has received nearly every possible coaching award. He has been tabbed as the American Volleyball Coaches Association's (DIII) National Coach of the Year five times and as the organization's region coach of the year on nine occasions. Bock also was a member of the AVCA's inaugural Hall of Fame Class (2003), was elected as one of the two NCAA Silver Anniversary (DIII) Team Head Coaches (2006), received the AVCA Founders Award for service to the sport (2000), garnered the USA Volleyball Trailblazer Award (2006) and was selected as the 2009 recipient of the All-Time Great Coaches Award by USA Volleyball. He has also served as Juniata's athletic director and was named the Division III Athletic Director of the Year in 2005.
A graduate of Penn State, Larry and his wife, Lyn, are the parents of two daughters.

"His 34 years of experience, over 1,300 career wins and two NCAA titles speak for themselves. Larry Bock has a gift for motivating and empowering his athletes. As a player, I wanted to work hard for him because of the example he set. He consistently creates challenging and rewarding environments for his players to develop as athletes and people. Navy is privileged to work with Larry, a coach with a great combination of intellect, integrity, and professionalism."
-- Melissa Myers, head coach Illinois State, former Juniata volleyball player
"Larry Bock is one of the nation's finest people and one of nation's elite coaches. This move will enhance everything the Navy volleyball program is about and gives Coach Bock another avenue to share his gifts with these volleyball athletes and the entire Navy Athletic Department. I wish all the successes that the Navy volleyball program can achieve with Coach Bock guiding these women."
-- Don Flora, head coach Texas Tech
"Larry's record speaks for itself. He is recognized as one of the all-time great coaches in all NCAA divisions. It is amazing the level of success his Juniata teams have always had under him. But what stands out most for myself with Larry is the class and graciousness he has about himself. He sets the perfect example and his players follow that. He is the same person with opposing coaches after wins as he is after losses. Larry has many great years of coaching at an elite level left in him and the success he had at Juniata will follow him to Navy."
