ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy volleyball head coach Larry Bock announced today the hiring of Steph Strauss as an assistant coach for the program.
"We have a wonderful opportunity with an amazing coach and person," said Bock, who coached Strauss for each of her four years when he was the head coach at Juniata. "Steph is someone who will help us with continuing to develop our setters and our first-swing offense. Her abilities will translate into more points for us on the scoreboard."
"I am very excited to join the Navy volleyball program," said Strauss. "Navy has made a true commitment to volleyball and the program has seen tremendous improvements over the past three years as a result. I look forward to teaming up with Larry and (assistant coach) Kait Kozak to help in the team's continued development. The Naval Academy is a very special place and I feel honored to have the opportunity to work with such passionate student-athletes and midshipmen."
Strauss, a native of Penn Hills, Pa., ranks sixth in Juniata history with over 3,400 career assists. She helped lead the Eagles to the title match of the 2009 NCAA (Division III) Tournament and to the semifinal of the event in 2007, `08 and `10. Juniata amassed an overall record of 142-20 during her four seasons.
Individually, Strauss received numerous laurels for her efforts both on the volleyball court and in the classroom. She was both a three-time All-American (2008, `09, 10) and a First-Team Academic All-American (2010) in her career. Strauss also was selected as the Landmark Athletic Conference's Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year for her sport (2010) and received the NCAA "Elite 88" Academic Award for having the highest grade-point average in Division III volleyball in 2009
Strauss has served as an assistant coach at her alma mater since graduating Summa Cum Laude from the school in 2011. The Eagles advanced to and won at least one match in the NCAA Tournament in each of her three years on the staff, while also winning a trio of conference titles.
