ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy volleyball team will open its 2014 campaign by playing host to the Kristen Dickmann Invitational over Labor Day weekend in Annapolis.
The Mids, who placed fifth in the Patriot League last season with a mark of 9-7, will welcome Providence, Southern Utah and The Citadel to the Aug. 29-30 event in the Wesley A. Brown Field House. Providence will be the first opponent of the year for the Mids, with the Mids and the Friars facing off at 7 p.m. the night of Aug. 29. Navy will then play host to both the Thunderbirds (11 a.m.) and the Bulldogs (6 p.m.) the following day. Additional round robin matches amongst the other teams also will be held on both Friday and Saturday.
Navy will take to the road for the next three weekends of play, a span that starts with matches at the Sept. 5-6 Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Va. The Mids will face Alabama, weekend-host Virginia and LIU Brooklyn over the course of the two days. The end of Navy's very brief three-week non-league season occurs the ensuing weekend when the Mids take part in the Sept. 12-13 Cleveland State Invitational. The Mids will open play against the tournament-host Vikings before taking on Toledo and Dayton.
Navy remains on the road for one more week as it will open Patriot League play with a Sept. 19 match at Lafayette.
After playing seven matches in a row on the road, Navy opens a stretch where it will play five of its next seven matches at home with contests against Lehigh (Sept. 26) and Bucknell (Sept. 27). The Mids then hit the road for just one match, an Oct. 3 contest at Colgate, before returning home to play host to Army (Oct. 10) and Holy Cross (Oct. 11) the next week. The match between the Mids and the Black Knights will serve as the Star Match between the programs.
A busy slate over the remainder of October begins with Navy playing at American (Oct. 17), hosting Loyola (Oct. 18), playing at Loyola (Oct. 24) and facing Lafayette at home (Oct. 26). The Mids then close the regular season by being on the road for four of their final six matches. This span begins with Navy competing at Bucknell (Oct. 31) and at Lehigh (Nov. 1), continues with the Mids playing host to American (Nov. 5) and Colgate (Nov. 8), and ends with one more road trip for matches at Holy Cross (Nov. 14) and Army (Nov. 15).
The top-four teams in the final Patriot League standings will advance to the league tournament. The top-seeded team in the event will play host to the Nov. 21-22 tournament that will determine the Patriot League's automatic entrant into the NCAA Tournament.
There is no admission charge to attend any Navy volleyball home match.
