Fortner and Jacobs to Lead Navy Volleyball Team in 2013
Aug. 7, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy volleyball team opened its fall season today, which marked the first practices of the year with seniors Erin Fortner (Villa Hills, Ky.) and Caroline Jacobs (Arnold, Md.) officially having leadership roles with the squad.
Fortner, a First-Team All-Patriot League selection in 2012, will serve as the captain of the team this fall.
"We are real fortunate to have one of the better players in program history as our team leader this year," said Navy head coach Larry Bock. "Erin is capable of inspiring this team both on and off the court."
Fortner ranked among the Patriot League leaders in kills last season. The right-side hitter recorded 10 or more kills in 19 of her 25 matches a year ago, including 16 of the last 17 matches of the campaign. Fortner also was named to the Patriot League All-Academic Team in 2012 for a second-consecutive season.
The noticeable offseason training commitment made by middle hitter Jacobs was lauded by Bock after the team's initial practice this morning as an example of the leadership skills she brings to the program, traits that mesh well with what Fortner provides the squad.
"From the time (assistant coach) Kait Kozak and I arrived at Navy (in the winter of 2011), it was real obvious Erin and Caroline had been taking on leadership roles from the very start of their respective careers," said Bock. "They complement each other so well, and together they will add points to the scoreboard for us in many ways."
