Volleyball to Close Non-League Season at Temple Invite
Sept. 13, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A trip to Philadelphia this weekend for a pair of matches at the Temple Invite will close out the non-league season for the Navy volleyball team. The Midshipmen will face the tournament-host Owls Friday at 7:30 p.m. before taking on Central Connecticut State Saturday at 1 p.m. in Temple's McGonigle Hall.
Links to free live statistics from both of Navy's matches this weekend are available at NavySports.com. Additionally, a video stream of Friday's match against Temple will be offered for $9.99.
"This weekend will be a good trial run for our upcoming Patriot League season," said Navy head coach Larry Bock. "We will play one match on Friday and one on Saturday, the same weekend format we will see throughout league play. Additionally, we will be facing two quality teams this weekend as we also will see in the Patriot League. These matches will give us a good working to-do list for the upcoming week of practice and our league opener."
Navy enters the final weekend of non-league play with a 3-7 record this fall. Last weekend, Navy lost in five sets to Air Force, lost in three sets to Denver and posted a 3-1 victory over The Citadel.
Temple has compiled a 7-4 record this season. This mark includes a 3-0 loss to South Carolina, a team Navy also has dropped a 3-0 decision to. The Owls posted an 8-20 record last year and tied for eighth place in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a 4-11 record. Temple was tabbed to place 11th in the A-10 this season.
Friday's match will be the first between the Mids and the Owls since 1996 and just the fourth overall. Temple has won all three previous matches in the series.
Central Connecticut State enters the weekend with a 5-5 record this season. Both the Blue Devils and the Mids have lost to West Virginia in three sets, both teams have defeated Hartford (CCSU in four sets, Navy in five) and Central Connecticut State has defeated future Navy foe Holy Cross twice (five sets and three sets). The Blue Devils placed third in the Northeast Conference last season with an 11-5 record in NEC play as part of their overall record of 20-11. Central Connecticut State was selected to match their conference placement of a year ago this season.
Navy holds a 3-1 advantage in the series with Central Connecticut State. The most recent meeting between the programs took place in 2010 when Navy won a three-set decision in a match played in Buffalo, N.Y.
Temple will face Central Connecticut State Friday at 4 p.m., with the Blue Devils also taking on Cornell Saturday at 10 a.m. prior to playing Navy.
Following play this weekend, Navy will open its Patriot League campaign with matches on Friday, Sept. 21 against Holy Cross (7 p.m.) and Saturday, Sept. 22 against Army (8 p.m.). Both matches will be played in the Wesley A. Brown Field House.
