ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Nov. 1) -- Navy's volleyball team enters its final two matches of the Patriot League season with hopes alive to qualify for the league's postseason tournament. Navy will play Friday night at Army, followed by a Saturday night match at Holy Cross. The Mids need to win both matches to have any hope of reaching the playoffs.

The top-four teams at season's end advance to the Patriot League Tournament. The Midshipmen begin the final week of their league season with a 4-6 league record and stand in sixth place. Both Army and Holy Cross are tied for third in the standings with 5-5 records, with Lehigh placed just ahead of Navy with a 5-4 record.

With victories in their final two matches this week Navy would finish the season with a 6-6 record. Navy would then have to wait until all teams finish their regular season on Nov. 10 to see if they have advanced to the playoffs. The key match on the final day of the league season will be Holy Cross at Army.

"It's simple for us," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We have to win both of our matches this week. All of the different scenarios one could come up with won't matter of we don't finish with a pair of victories."

Navy defeated Army in the first match of the season between the two service academy rivals. The Mids rallied from a 12-9 fifth-game deficit to defeat the Black Knights, 15-9, 8-15, 10-15, 15-5, 15-12, Oct. 13 at Macdonough Hall. Navy had 47 digs and 12 aces in the match, compared to 38 and three for Army. However, the Black Knights outhit the Mids, .270-.191. Erin Musser (Sr., Industry, Pa.) had 16 kills to lead Navy, with Erica McElroy (So., Henderson, Nev.) totaling 15 kills and 10 digs. Army's Leah Shubin lead all attackers with 25 kills in the match.

"The first match of the season had many rallies and twists and turns in it," said Schwob. "In other words, it was what we have come to expect from an Army-Navy match, and it is what I expect again on Friday night."

Playing just 24 hours after their biggest victory of the season, Navy was swept by Holy Cross, 15-4, 15-12, 15-8. The Crusaders hit .245 on the night with 11 aces and 31 digs, while limiting Navy to a .129 hitting percentage and just 27 digs and three aces. Jessica Ostlund and Cheryl Jakielo led Holy Cross with nine kills each, while Kristin Davidson and Megan O'Connell each had seven kills for Navy.
