Black Knights Register First Three-Game Sweep of Navy Since 1995

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Sophomore Leah Shubin belted 14 kills and Michele Frymier had 11 kills and 12 digs to lead the Army volleyball team to a 15-7, 15-12, 15-8 victory over arch-rival Navy before a standing-room-only crowd of 1,050 at Gillis Field House Friday night.

Army's victory avenged a tough five-game loss to Navy earlier this season, and it was doubly important because the Midshipmen entered the match just a single game behind Army in the Patriot League standings. The Black Knights improved to 16-10 overall (10-1 at home) and 6-5 in conference play, while Navy dropped to 11-15, 4-7.

Clinging to a 9-7 lead in the opening game, the Black Knights rattled off six consecutive points to finish it, three coming on Katie Konkel's serve and the last three on Beth Bellinger's. A Bellinger ace brought Army to match point, and Shubin ended it with a cross-court kill.

The Black Knights were forced to come from behind twice to capture a lengthy, see-saw game two. Trailing 12-11 after a Megan O'Connell kill, Army coaxed four straight points to grab a commanding two-games-to-none lead. Freshman Caitlin Machon, who had been on the bench for much of game two, returned to the floor and had a hand in each of the final three points of the frame. Machon and Emily Eagan stuffed a Navy attack to provide the game's final lead change. Then the lanky rookie added a kill and a solo block for points 14 and 15.

Army took command of game three early, racing to leads of 8-4 and 12-6. Navy cut it to 12-8 before Army wrapped things up with service aces from Konkel - her fourth of the match - and Erin Kennedy, and a game-ending block from Bellinger and Machon.

Erin Musser led Navy with eight kills, while Erica McElroy added seven kills and 12 digs. Kristin Davidson also had seven kills, and Jessica Norman handed out 15 set assists.

Machon led all players with six blocks, and Army's Liz Andreichuk added two blocks, the first of which was the 300th of her career. Andreichuk, who was honored before the match for becoming Army's all-time blocks leader, is the first player in school history to reach the 300-block plateau.
