ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy volleyball team will attempt to move its record above the .500 level for the season when the Midshipmen play Tuesday at Towson. Live statistics from the 7 p.m. match will be available at NavySports.com, as will a link to the video stream Towson is offering for $10.95.
"This match will be a good measuring stick for us to make sure we advancing our play at this critical time of the year," said Navy head coach Larry Bock. "We have a number of items on our to-do list that we want to work on in this match."
Navy enters the week with a 12-12 record on the season and an 8-4 mark in Patriot League play, while Towson has compiled a record of 8-20 on the season. The Mids dropped a 25-23, 25-16, 28-26 match to the Tigers two weeks ago in Annapolis. It was a miscue-filled night for Navy as the Mids accrued 41 various errors to just 27 for the Tigers. Additionally, Navy led a 23-20 lead in the first set slip away.
Towson held slim leads over Navy in total kills (41-39), digs (41-35) and blocks (5-4), as well as a significant advantage in hitting percentage (.289-.167).
Navy opposite hitter Erin Fortner (Sr., Villa Hills, Ky.) totaled 18 kills, hit .302 and snared 11 digs in the match. However, the remainder of the Navy team combined for just 21 kills and a .077 hitting percentage.
Towson's Saitaua Iosia and Haley Pa'akaula each recorded 11 kills and hit over .300 to lead the Tigers.
"It was not an especially well-played match by us the first time we played Towson," said Bock. "They are an athletic and physical team that will provide us a really good opponent to play against, one that is similar to the types of teams we will see over the next couple of weeks."
The Mids have won each of their four matches since facing the Tigers. That includes Navy winning three matches in a span of five days last week. Helping the Mids to their trio of wins was Alli Graf (Fr., Annapolis, Md.), who was recognized Monday as the Patriot League Rookie (Freshman) of the Week. Graf, Navy's libero, averaged 4.20 kills over the course of Navy's wins over Loyola (3-0), Lehigh (3-1) and Bucknell (3-0). She posted 23 of those digs in the victory over the Mountain Hawks.
Additionally, her 354 digs this year ranks second among Navy freshmen to the 389 hauled in by Jessie Sims
