Nov. 12, 2012
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy setter Alex Karika (Fr., Cranberry Township, Pa.) was announced Monday as this week's recipient of the Molten Patriot League Rookie-of-the-Week Award for volleyball.
Karika first dished out 56 assists in Navy's five-set victory over Bucknell on Nov. 9. She also added three kills and three blocks in the win that assured the Mids of at least a .500 season in Patriot League play for the first time since the 2007 campaign. The following day, Karika recorded 40 assists and tied a season high with four kills in a four-set loss by the Mids to first-place Colgate. She would also snare five digs in both of Navy's matches on the weekend.
Helping Karika to her assist totals was the play of Erin Fortner (Jr., Villa Hills, Ky.). The right-side hitter posted 18 kills against Bucknell before knocking down 21 kills against Colgate. Fortner tallied 11 kills in the third set alone against the Raiders.
Karika currently leads the Patriot League in assists per set (9.84 aps) for the full season and averaged the most assists in the league during the Patriot League campaign (10.38 aps). She previously was tabbed as the league's top rookie on Sept. 17.
