ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Nov. 13) - Navy's volleyball team will play its final match of the 2000 season Nov. 14 at Macdonough Hall against Morgan State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Midshipmen enter the match with a 14-17 record, while Morgan State has a 22-15 record. Navy is coming off its marathon victory against Loyola (Md.) on Nov. 7. Navy won the match in five games, with a game-five score of 28-26. With the victory, Navy set a NCAA record for most points scored in a single game, breaking the old record of 26.
Prior to Tuesday's match, Navy will honor the four senior members of the Navy volleyball team: Rachael Benton, Melissa Coombes, Erin Musser and Megan O'Connell.
Benton (Severna Park, Md.) has totaled over 400 kills and 500 digs in her career as a Midshipman. Twice this season she has recorded seven kills in a match. Coombes (Los Altos, Calif.) is one of the more feared servers in the Patriot League. She has 41 service aces on the season and in two matches this year has recorded five aces. Coombes ranks sixth in the Patriot League for aces per game.
Musser (Industry, Pa.) is Navy's kill leader on the season with 302 and ranks sixth in the Patriot League for kills per game. Twice this season she has had 20 kills in a match and recorded 10 or more kills in 17 of Navy's 31 matches. O'Connell (Beaverdam, Va.) ranks third in Navy's Division I history with 324 career blocks. Navy's team captain this season, O'Connell leads the Patriot league in hitting percentage and has accumulated over 600 career kills.
"Whether they have played one year or four years, they are a part of the Navy volleyball tradition," said head coach Mike Schwob. "We are going to enjoy recognizing them Tuesday night for their contributions to the program, but at the same time we will be sorry to see their careers come to an end."
