League Volleyball Tourney Info/Army-Navy Highlights
ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– American, Navy, Army West Point and Lehigh will comprise the field for the 2017 Patriot League Volleyball Tournament that will be contested Nov. 18-19 in Bender Arena on the American campus in Washington, D.C.
Navy is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will face No. 3 seed Army at 5 p.m. on Saturday in the second of the two semifinal round matches. The Mids earned the second seed –– Navy’s highest since also being the No. 2 seed in 2005 –– by finishing one win in front of the No. 3 Black Knights. Navy posted a five-set victory over Army Sunday –– the Black Knights defeated the Mids in five sets in the first meeting of the season –– to end the year with a 12-4 record in league play.
The Eagles earned the right to play host to the event by virtue of winning the regular season with a 15-1 record against league foes. That one loss was a four-set defeat to the Mids. American will face No. 4 seed Lehigh Saturday, which ended the regular season with a 9-7 record. The Mountain Hawks shared fourth place with Colgate in the final standings, but advanced to the tournament on the third tiebreaker as it outscored the Raiders 138-133 in points tallied during the two head-to-head matches between the teams.
The American-Lehigh match will be the first semifinal contest and will begin at 2 p.m.
Saturday’s semifinal winners will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday in the championship match, with the winner earning the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Each of the three matches will be streamed online for free via the Patriot League Network.
Admission to the tournament is $8 for adults and $5 for both youth (17-and-under) and seniors (65-and-older). Additionally, current students from each of the four participating schools will be admitted for free by showing a valid school ID card at the ticket window.
