Sophomore rightside hitter Ashley Van Hartesvelt and the Navy volleyball team are featured in the January 2003 issue of Volleyball Magazine.

The two-page photo essay follows Van Hartesvelt (Breckenridge, Colo.) as she goes through a typical day as a Midshipman and as a student-athlete at the Naval Academy. The essay, shot by Alison Harbaugh, includes photos of Van Hartesvelt at morning formation, at meals, walking to class, studying and with her teammates prior to and during a match. Accompanying the photos is a brief interview Van Hartesvelt did with magazine publisher Don Patterson.

"We are very grateful to Don Patterson and Volleyball Magazine for this story on Ashley and our program," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "It is not only good exposure for our team, but also for the Naval Academy as it gives an accurate depiction of just how unique a typical day is like for a Midshipman.

"In addition, we have to give thanks to both the Commandant's Office, as well as to the Naval Academy's Public Affairs Office for giving us their immediate permission and allowing the photographer access to Bancroft Hall for this project."

Van Hartesvelt, who was named the Patriot League's Co-Rookie of the Year in 2001, finished the 2002 season by leading Navy in kills and ranking fifth in the league in service aces and sixth in kills. In just two seasons at the Naval Academy she has totaled 652 kills and 83 service aces.
