ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The 2012 Navy volleyball team met many of the goals the players and coaches had set for themselves at the start of the season, while narrowly missing several others. With 11 overall wins, the Mids won more matches this season than the program had since 2008. Navy also recorded its highest placement in the Patriot League (fifth) standings since that same 2008 campaign, were in the race for a berth in the league tournament through the end of the penultimate day of the season and recorded the most league wins (seven) by a Navy team since 2007.

"We wanted to become competitive at a higher level this season, especially within in the Patriot League," said Navy head coach Larry Bock, who completed his second year with the program. "This will also be our goal next season. We want to continue raising the bar.

"The idea of executing with a few different skills at a few different positions has improved," said Bock. "There is never any question about the team's physical, mental or emotional abilities; our needs were better ball control, altitude and attacking heat on the outside to allow us to put more points on the scoreboard. It all comes down to executing better."

The Mids compiled a 7-7 record during the Patriot League, a mark that placed the team fifth in the final league seasons. Edging the Mids for the fourth and final berth in the Patriot League Tournament was Lehigh, which ended the regular season with an 8-6 record against fellow league foes. Additionally, the seven league wins by the Mids was an improvement of six from its 2011 total. This establishes a new league record for the largest one-year improvement in victories.

"The team set the goal of making the Patriot League Tournament," said Bock. "It that regard, we failed. There is a genuine appreciation of the players for the progress, for sure, but there is a larger sense of much more work remaining. The neat thing with this team is we can now see the top of mountain whereas before we couldn't. Now we just have to play better."

Concluding their respective Navy careers were Carolyn Ewert (Bakersfield, Calif.), Kelsey Owen (Canfield, Ohio) and Christy Rapp (Royal Oak, Mich.), who are slated to graduate this spring. The trio has won five Patriot League matches over the course of their first three seasons before winning seven matches this year. Both Ewert and Owen will enter the Navy's surface warfare community upon graduation, while Rapp will be commissioned as an officer in the Marine Corps.

"I hope that down the road these seniors are perceived to be the class that was one to set the foundation for the future success of this program," said Bock. "Kelsey was a magnificent captain and leader. We all will continue to benefit from the impact she had on the team. Carolyn is a solid, committed, determined, talented player who we depended upon in all phases of the game. Christy just became really, really good. I wish all three of them were here longer; I feel somewhat cheated to have only had two seasons to coach and know them."

Navy's 2013 team will include four members of its starting lineup from the 2012 season, including setter Alex Karika (Fr., Cranberry Township, Pa.), who led the Patriot League in assists and was named as the league's rookie of the year, and Erin Fortner (Jr., Villa Hills, Ky.), who ranked second in the league in kills and earned First-Team All-Patriot League honors. Karika, Fortner and all of the returning members of the team will reassemble this winter and spring for training and to compete in four tournaments.

"Our immediate goals are to improve our overall ball control, specifically with passing and defense," said Bock. "Our passing has continued to improve through the last two seasons and want to keep going on that upward path. Improvement in passing is similar to the improvement of an offensive line in football. It is not that observable on the surface, but as we improve our passing it will show up on the scoreboard.

"I think it was Will Rogers who said, "even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.' I like the track we as a program are on, but we have to keep moving forward."
