Navy Women’s Cross Country Wins Navy Invitational
Links associated with this release: ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy women’s cross country team performed well in its only home meet of the season Saturday, as the host Midshipmen (5-0) won the six-team Navy Invitational at the USNA Cross Country Course. The Mids scored 45 points in the victory, ahead of Delaware (59), American (80), Maryland (116), George Mason (119) and UMBC (190). Additionally, Navy is credited with five dual-meet victories on the day. Navy women’s cross country captain Melanie Stock (Sr./Mechanicsburg, Pa.) held off a late-race charge from American runners Samia Akbar and Jen Baclawski to win the race –– her first-ever victory. Stock finished the 5,000-meter course in a time of 19:08.94. Akbar and Baclawski finished second and third, respectively. “Melanie led by 60 meters throughout the race, and then held off the late charge over the final 200 meters,” said Navy head coach Karen Boyle. Navy’s Sara Waters (So./Aurora, Colo.) placed fourth overall in a time of 19:46.22, while Abby Wilder (So./Lake Geneva, Wis.) (11th-place, 19:55.25), Kristyn Kern (Fr./Commerce Twp., Mich.) (13th, 19:57.38) and Stephanie Patterson (So./Mayville, Mich.) (16th, 20:15.12) rounded out the Midshipmen’s top-five finishers. Lily Thomas (So./Somerville, N.J.) (18th, 20:19.96) and Maureen Carr (Jr./Fair Haven, Md.) (19th, 20:25.52) finished in point-scoring positions as well.
