2017 Salty Dog Invitational on Tap for Women’s Cross Country
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – One week after going 6-0 at the Mount St. Mary’s 5k Duals, the Navy women’s cross country team will look to continue its fast start with action on its home course this Saturday morning. Beginning at 9:30 a.m., the Mids will host the 2017 Salty Dog Invitational at the United States Naval Academy Golf Course.
Eight teams from across the Mid-Atlantic region will compete on Saturday. Navy will welcome American, Bowie State, Maryland, McDaniel, St. Mary’s (Md.), Towson and UMBC.
Navy kicked off its 2017 campaign with racing in Emmitsburg, Md. last Friday. Competing on a 5k course, the Mids defeated all six of their opponents as the event used dual-style scoring matchups. On the strength of sophomore Claire Ostrowski’s 14.2-second outright victory at 17:57.91, Navy’s closest dual competition was with George Washington at 22-38.
In last year’s Salty Dog Invitational, Navy placed second behind Maryland, who knocked off the host Mids, 43-48. In the rest of the team standings, Navy placed ahead of UMBC, George Washington, Loyola, Bowie State and McDaniel. Four of Navy’s runners place in the top-11 to lead the way. Returning senior Allison Parks was the top finisher as she came in seventh place at 23:21.01. Current junior Erin McDonnell also placed in the top-10 as she ranked ninth at 23:41.18.
