ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women’s cross country team will host the annual Salty Dog Invitational 6k race this Saturday at the U.S.N.A. Golf Club. The Navy men’s race is slated to begin at 11 a.m., with the women’s race following at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Navy will welcome seven teams to Annapolis for this year’s Salty Dog Invitational, including two teams ranked in the top 15 in the USTFCCCA's Mid-Atlantic region preseason poll. American is slotted 4th in the first poll, while UMBC is slotted at 14th. Bowie State, George Washington, Howard, Loyola (Md.) and Maryland will also compete this weekend.
Navy is hosting the Salty Dog Open/Invitational for the 12th consecutive year. Prior to the Salty Dog Invitational, the Midshipmen played host to the Navy Invitational six times. The Mids will be looking for sixth invitational title on Saturday, as they were champions in 2002, '04, '05, ’11 and ‘12.
Last year, Navy won the Salty Dog Invitational by placing five runners in the top-11.
The Mids were idle last week and were ranked sixth in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic region preseason rankings. Georgetown, Penn State, Villanova, Princeton and West Virginia are ranked 1-5, respectively.
Following the Salty Dog Invitational, Navy will travel to Charlottesville, Va. for the Panorama Rams Invitational. The meet begins at noon.
