Navy Women’s Cross Country Takes 11th Place at Iona Meet of Champions

BRONX, N.Y. –– Racing for the first time in three weeks, the Navy women’s cross country team took home an 11th-place finish in the 22-team, Seventh-Annual Paddy Doyle Iona Meet of Champions Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park.

The Midshipmen finished with a total of 312 points, just one point shy of 10th-place Connecticut (311). Boston College, ranked 12th in the Sept. 24 FinishLynx Women’s Cross Country Rankings won the meet with a total of 31 points, while 23rd-ranked Boston University (109 points), Cornell (114), sixth-ranked Yale (115) and Dartmouth (128) rounded out the top-five teams.

Team captain Melanie Stock (Sr./Mechanicsburg, Pa.) was the first Navy runner across the finish line, finishing the course (44th place) with a time of 22:06.1. Abby Wilder (So./Lake Geneva, Wis.) came across the line in 66th place (22:33.9), while Lisa Procaccini (Jr./Vienna, Va.) (68th place/22:34.9), Sara Waters (So./Aurora, Colo.) (90th/22:52.9) and Lily Thomas (So./Somerville, N.J.) (107th/23:03.8) rounded out the Mids’ top-five finishers.

“An 11th-place finish is very respectable considering the competition in this race,” said Navy head coach Karen Boyle, noting that six teams finishing ahead of the Midshipmen were either ranked or receiving votes in the FinishLynx rankings. “We are coming together pretty well, and running more as a team now.”

Navy will get back into action on Oct. 6 when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to run in Lehigh’s Paul Short Invitational at 11 a.m.
