Annapolis, Md. - After a well-deserved week off, the Navy women's cross country team heads back out onto the course Friday when it competes in the Gulden Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.
The Mids will enter the Gulden Invite, hosted by Bucknell, with a lot of confidence and success thus far this season. Two weeks ago at the Salty Seadog Open, the Midshipmen won the team title with 44 points and edged out Patriot League-foe American by ten points (54) for the championship. The title was the second in three meets for Navy this season, including a season-opening win at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational on Sept. 4.
"We are definitely ahead of where we were last year," head coach Karen Boyle said.
Sophomore Emily Castro (Centennial, Colo.) has been a steady performer for Navy throughout the early part of the season. Castro has been Navy's top runner in the past two meets and in seven of the last eight meets dating back to last season. Castro placed third overall at the Salty Seadog, which was the highest finish of her young career.
Another sophomore who has been one of the main contributors for the Midshipmen is Christine Taranto (Coraopolis, Pa.). At the Salty Seadog, Taranto recorded a career high when she crossed the finish-line in fourth. It was her second top-10 finish this season, as she also placed sixth at the Mount St. Mary's Invite.
"Christine has run really well this year and I'm proud of her for it," Boyle added. "She ran pretty well near the end of last season and it has carried over into this season."
A pair of freshmen have been pleasant surprises for the Mids, as Kyleigh Millhouse (Boiling Springs, Pa.) and Arwyn Becker (Avon, Colo.) have been among Navy's top-four runners in the past two meets.
"We knew we had some quality freshmen coming in this year and I'm excited to see some of them running well," Boyle said. "Kyleigh and Arwyn continue to get better each day in practice and that will help at the end of the season."
