Mids Set for Patriot League Championship

Captain Colleen Maloney will help lead the Mids at the Patriot League Championship on Saturday.

Annapolis, Md. -- Navy women's cross country (3-2) will compete in the Patriot League Championship on Saturday in Easton, Pa. The Mids were selected to finish fourth in the league in the preseason poll, behind Army American and Bucknell.

The Mids are led by freshmen Emily Castro (Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) and Erin Demchko (Nanuet, N.Y./Pearl River), who have combined to post the top-Navy time in every race this season. Both have finished in the top-10 three times this season, and Castro led the Mids at the Paul Short Invitational with a 29th-place finish in the field of 224.

“We fell apart on the Army course trying to run as a tight pack,” commented head coach Karen Boyle of the Mids last outing. “We're looking forward to the Patriot League Championship and regrouping this weekend. We're very focused on running strong as a unit, and hopefully we'll finish higher than we were picked in the preseason. American and Army as well as Bucknell and Lehigh are right in this, and it's going to be a tight competition. It should be very exciting.”

The women are slated to run the 6,000-meter course at noon, following the men's league championship, which is set to begin at 11 a.m. The top-10 individual finishers will earn first-team All-League status, while those student-athletes finishing 11-20 will gain second-team all-star accolades.
