CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy senior Brigid Byrne has been named the Patriot League Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced by the conference on Wednesday. Byrne was also voted to the Academic All-Patriot League Team along with sophomore Annie-Norah Beveridge.

Byrne, who is majoring English (honors) with a minor in Arabic, sports a 3.91 GPA and has been named to both the Superintendant's and Commandant's Lists in all six semesters at the Naval Academy. She has earned a perfect 4.0 in four semesters, including each of the last three.

It marks the third consecutive season Byrne has been voted to the Academic-All Patriot League team. Additionally, she has twice been selected to both the indoor and outdoor track all-academic teams. Last season, the native of Vienna, Va., earned Academic All-America accolades.

Byrne claims Navy's second Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, joining Erica Ziel who won the honor in 2008.

This season Byrne has been either Navy's first or second finisher in all seven races in which she has competed. The team captain has four, top-seven finishes and most recently placed second at the Patriot League Championship. For her effort at the conference championship, Byrne earned a spot on the All-Patriot League first team.

Beveridge combined with Byrne to create the league's most dominant duo on the course this season. Beveridge, who hails from Ann Arbor, Mich., won the Patriot League individual title and was named the conference's runner of the year. She was the No. 1 overall finisher in three meets this season and placed in the top 15 of all seven races in which she competed. Beveridge was also named the Patriot League Runner of the Week a conference-record five times in 2012.

In the classroom, Beveridge carries a 3.51 GPA and is majoring in international relations. As a freshman last season, she was named to the Superintendant's and Commandant's Lists in both semesters.
