UNIVERSITY, Pa. (Nov. 11) - The Navy women's cross country team took fifth place at the Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Regional Championship Saturday at the Penn State Blue/White Golf Courses.

Melissa Foon (Sr./Lexington, Ky.) had a record-setting day for the Midshipmen. Foon's third-place finish is the highest Navy finish in NCAA Regional competition and qualifies her for a spot in the NCAA Cross Country Championship to be held Nov. 20 in Ames, Iowa.

Foon finished the 6000-meter course in 20:48.59. This was the first year the women have competed on a 6000m course. When converted to a 5000m race, it would come out to a time of 17:20, setting a school record. Foon was awarded All-Academic Individual honors by placing in the top 10 percent in the meet and maintaining a 3.25 GPA.

"I couldn't be more elated for the team and for Melissa," said head coach Karen Boyle. "They all ran smart races. They went out and raced conservatively and raced the final 2000 meters extremely well. Melissa moved from 12th place at the first mile, to third at the end of the race."

Captain Amy Baxter (Sr./Cheshire, Conn.) and Abby Wilder (Fr./Lake Geneva, Wis.) also had solid performances. Wilder came in 32nd with a time of 22:20.2, while Baxter placed 36th a time of 22:23:41.
