Women's Cross Country Places 12th at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional

University Park, Pa. - The Navy women's cross country concluded its 2004 season Saturday with a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at the Penn State Blue-White Golf Course in University Park, Pa.
The Mids finished with 317 points and were just 11 shy of 11th-place Maryland (306 points). West Virginia won the team title with 63 points, while Villanova followed in second place with 68 points. By finishing among the top-two teams in the regional, both schools advanced to the NCAA Championship on November 22 at Indiana State.
Navy was led by sophomore Emily Castro (Centennial, Colo.), who placed 28th in a time of 22:13. It marked the fifth race this season that Castro has been Navy's top runner. One of those races came two weeks ago at the Patriot League Championship where she earned first-team all-league honors with a third-place finish.
Classmate Christine Taranto (Coraopolis, Pa.) concluded her strong individual season -- which included being named a First-Team All-Patriot League selection at the league championship -- with a 66th-place finish in a time of 23:08.
Freshman Arwyn Becker (Avon, Colo.) followed in 69th in 23:09, while sophomore Justine Whipple (Duxbury, Mass.) placed 75th in a time of 23:21.
Freshman Kyleigh Millhouse (Boiling Springs, Pa.), who was named the 2004 Patriot League Rookie of the Year two weeks ago at the league championship, finished the regional in 79th place with a time of 23:26.
Rounding out Navy's top-seven runners were sophomores Juliann Jordan (Kaneohe, Hawai'i) in 81st (23:28) and Erin Demchko (Nanuet, N.Y.) in 101st (23:57).
